A steady hand in the face of uncertainty is key to addressing operational risk in volatile times
As trade tensions ripple across global markets, GT Insurance is reaffirming its commitment to flexibility, partnership, and forward-thinking marine coverage.
The latest round of US tariffs at the time of this article being written - 25% on Australian steel and aluminium, and 10% on other exported goods – has introduced a new layer of uncertainty for local exporters when they came into effect from 5 April 2025. Key sectors like beef and bulk freight could feel the squeeze, not just from direct tariff impacts but also from downstream competition as global exporters seek alternative markets. With the volatility and speed of announcements being made, the situation is subject to change.
Despite these developments, GT Insurance remains calm and ready. As a specialist underwriting agency with over 25 years of experience supporting heavy motor, marine, and machinery clients, the team is focused on helping brokers and their clients adapt with confidence.
“We understand the challenges our marine clients face when external pressures like tariffs disrupt trade flows or freight earnings,” said Steve Amey, head of distribution for Marine at GT Insurance.
“Our approach is always to work proactively with brokers to reassess policy terms, limits or structures to better match our clients’ real-time operating conditions.”
Flexibility when it matters most
While the long-term impact of these tariffs remains uncertain, the short-term effect could be a decline in export volume or a reduction in freight margins - especially for clients relying on U.S. demand or exposed to global price competition.
GT Insurance is encouraging brokers to reach out if their clients are experiencing any drop in gross freight earnings or significant shifts in operational risk.
“Our marine insurance solutions are designed with flexibility in mind,” Amey added.
This collaborative, adaptive approach is a hallmark of GT Insurance. With a relationship-first model and national footprint across metro and regional markets, the company prides itself on fast, transparent decision-making and a commitment to real-world outcomes.
GT Insurance offers a range of annual, open cover, and single shipment policies for imports, exports and goods in transit around Australia. Explore and compare marine insurance products here.
Stronger together: the broker partnership model
In volatile times, the value of experience and ability to deliver flexible solutions becomes even more important. For GT Insurance, that means working hand-in-hand with its broker network to ensure that our risk solutions remain timely, relevant and commercially sound.
“The role of the broker is pivotal,” Amey stated. “They know their client’s operations inside out, and we rely on those insights to provide cover that’s not only fit for purpose but adaptable when conditions change.”
GT Insurance continues to invest in broker relationships and the development of tailored solutions across its marine portfolio, including cargo, hull, and carrier’s liability products.
This philosophy is part of a broader company-wide commitment to “Powering Progress” - helping Australian businesses move forward confidently, even when market conditions are complex.

You keep the world moving. It's your journey that moves us
For many Australians, insurance isn’t just about policies, it’s about protecting livelihoods, supporting resilience, and empowering progress. For GT Insurance, that mission has taken on new momentum in the year since its merger with marine specialist AM&T.
Now backed by the global strength of Allianz and powered by a dedicated team of local experts, GT Insurance is more equipped than ever to help brokers and their customers navigate uncertainty with confidence.
Expanding capability without compromising care
When AM&T officially joined forces with GT Insurance, it marked more than just a business integration. It represented a strategic investment in specialist capability, deeper industry insight, and a broader appetite across an expanding range of sectors.
The result is a team that combines decades of transport, logistics, and marine underwriting expertise with a customer-first mindset.
“We’ve brought together the strengths of two trusted names in the market,” said Tony Dodd, CEO of GT Insurance. “But more importantly, we’ve built a platform for long-term progress - for our brokers, their customers, and the industries we serve.”
From commercial transport fleets to complex marine risks, GT Insurance has positioned itself to anticipate tomorrow’s needs — not just respond to today’s.
“We understand the environments our brokers are operating in,” Dodd said. “They need a partner who’s agile, forward-thinking, and ready to back them up with practical support. That’s where we come in.”
Delivery that matches the promise
For Dodd and his team, capability means very little without consistent, quality delivery—and in 2025, that delivery will see some important upgrades.
“We’ve been laser-focused on continuous enhancements to our customer experience,” Dodd explained. “Brokers rely on us to deliver so they can fulfil promises to their customers. That means providing carefully crafted policies, seamless and swift experiences both online and offline, and support from real people when it suits them.”
That commitment to human-centered service is at the core of GT Insurance’s strategy. In a world increasingly dominated by automation, the insurer is doubling down on expert-led support, empowering brokers with people who understand the nuances of risk and can tailor solutions in real-time.
“Exceptional claims support is a huge part of that equation,” Dodd added. “When the unexpected happens, we want brokers and their customers to know they’re not just getting a payout — they’re getting a partner who’s ready to help them get back on track.”
The road ahead: enhancing the GT Insurance experience
Looking to the year ahead, GT Insurance has its sights set on delivering an even better experience for brokers.
While the business continues to build its reputation for relationship management and technical knowledge, 2025 will see the introduction of several digital enhancements designed to bring greater speed, simplicity, and transparency to the insurance journey.
“Technology will play an increasingly important role in how we support brokers,” Dodd said. “But we’re not using tech to replace people — we’re using it to empower them. Whether that’s faster quoting tools, streamlined claims handling, or clearer communication channels, it all comes back to making life easier for the people we serve.”
The upcoming changes are part of GT Insurance’s broader Powering Progress campaign, a reflection of its commitment to supporting brokers in navigating complex and fast-changing risk landscapes.
“The world doesn’t stand still, and neither do we,” said Dodd. “We’re building the kind of insurance business that brokers can rely on — not just now, but well into the future.”
A trusted partner in a dynamic market
As the insurance industry continues to evolve, brokers are facing new expectations from their customers. In turn, they need insurer partners who are responsive, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in their success.
GT Insurance is stepping into that role with renewed energy and a bigger toolkit.
From tailored risk solutions to responsive claims support, the business is proving that a great insurance experience doesn’t happen by accident. It takes people who care, processes that work, and a vision that stays one step ahead.
“Every broker we work with is helping someone move forward,” Dodd reflected. “Whether it’s a small business protecting its fleet or a freight operator managing complex marine exposures, our role is to back them up with clarity, confidence, and consistency.”
Start the conversation
With the merger now fully integrated and new capabilities in place, GT Insurance is inviting brokers to explore what the future could look like — together.

AM&T re-brands as GT Marine
Following the successful merger of GT Insurance and Allianz Marine & Transit (AM&T) in April 2023, AM&T has re-branded as GT Marine.
GT Marine’s team of industry experts continue to provide the same specialist advice, service and support, now alongside GT’s complementary specialisations GT Transport, GT Plant & Machinery, and GT Mobility.
Stronger together, our merger brings more diverse coverage, an even greater capability to manage risk, and the resources to deliver an exceptional, customer-first experience. But most importantly, our greater breadth doesn’t come at the expense of depth. We’re committed to providing bespoke solutions which cater to the specific needs of the industries we serve.
And that goes for GT Marine. Whilst some things change, the most important things remain the same.
Although we can’t control the weather, we can be more aware and prepared to help reduce possible accidents happening.
Here’s our tips to stay safe on the roads during winter:
As always, you should avoid driving during unpredictable and severe weather events and conditions
- Watch the weather
If you’re planning a trip, whether local or a long haul, always check the weather forecast beforehand so you can make an educated decision whether it’s safe to drive. If the conditions are looking severe, it may be best to delay your trip. - Slow, steady and a safe distance
Wet weather and icy conditions can make surfaces very slippery. Keep to a steady and safe speed, and don’t follow vehicles in front of you too closely – it takes much longer to stop in the wet. - Look out for black ice
In close to freezing temperatures, keep a look out for signals of black ice on the roads. Black ice is a thin layer of transparent ice that often makes the road look slightly wet. One signal of possible black ice is if there is no longer any spray coming from the tyres of the vehicle in front of you. - Driving in fog
In heavy, thick fog that limits visibility, use your lights and slow down. Even if other vehicles are traveling faster, stick to a speed you are comfortable with. Use your wipers and demisters to keep your windscreen as clear as possible. - Be aware of aquaplaning
In heavy rain, your tyres can lose traction due to water on the road, causing aquaplaning. If your vehicle does start aquaplaning, hold the steering wheel straight, gently ease off the gas and avoid hitting the brakes until you regain control. - Know when to stop
When weather conditions are so severe it becomes too dangerous for you to drive, find a place to safely stop as soon as you can. There’s nothing more important than keeping yourself safe.

In a recent highlight at the Northern Territory Insurance Conference (NTIC), held at the Darwin Convention Centre from the 18th to the 20th of October, John Carey, our esteemed NT Underwriter at GT Insurance, secured the well-deserved title of BDM/Underwriting Professional of the Year 2023.
This year's NTIC centred around the theme of "People, Purpose & Passion”. With purpose and passion, commitment and focus, everyone can forge a pathway to success.
The event not only allowed industry professionals operating in the Northern Territory the opportunity to contribute to the sustainability of the insurance sector but also provided the chance to engage in high-level professional development opportunities in Darwin.
To be recognised for the BDM/Underwriting Professional of the Year Award, nominees had to demonstrate a superior level of technical knowledge and customer service within their underwriting department or business development role. The judging panel evaluated each nominee based on their consistency in delivering outstanding performance, ability to inspire or lead others toward improved outcomes for clients, employers, and other stakeholders, as well as their presentation of measurable results and appropriate indicators. We firmly believe that John Carey possesses all these qualities and was a worthy recipient of this award.
John shares his thoughts on receiving this award:
“I'm honoured to be awarded as BDM/Underwriting Professional of the Year, and absolutely thrilled to have been recognised by our Brokers as an outstanding service provider. My success is a clear reflection of the passion and pride I have in our business, and the effort, dedication and care I apply to my role. I've long believed that if you give the world the best you have, the best will come back to you. I'm very fortunate to be surrounded by many great people. Many of whom continue to assist in my professional development, and I'm extremely proud to share my success with them as a reward for their investment in me and my future. I look forward to pursing a leadership role within GT, which may allow me to give back to our business in training, mentoring, or providing a positive influence on people, and I hope my achievement inspires others to push themselves in pursuit of their goals”.
The recognition of John receiving this award reflects his commitment and tireless efforts in supporting both his team and clients, congratulations for this remarkable achievement.

This prestigious award underscores GT Insurance's commitment to fostering a positive workplace environment, adopting professional growth, innovation, collaboration, and ensuring employee well-being.
GT Insurance CEO Tony Dodd said, "I am very proud that GT Insurance has been recognised by Insurance Business as a Top Employer in our industry for the third year in a row."
"This award not only recognises the company’s commitment to supporting our employees through access to career pathways, training and feedback opportunities – it recognises that our people are linked to the values embedded in our culture. This is what makes GT Insurance a great place to work and a Top Insurance Employer.”
About Top Insurance Employers
Every year, Insurance Business seeks out the best employers in the industry, by inviting organisations across Australia and New Zealand to outline their offerings and practices for attracting and retaining top talent.
A dedicated IB team reviews all nominations, which include anonymous forms from employees evaluating their workplace on a range of metrics such as benefits, compensation, culture, employee development, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. To be considered for the final list, each organisation must achieve an average satisfaction rating of 80% or greater from a minimum number of employee responses based on overall size.
GT Insurance is delighted to be considered a Top Insurance Employer for 2023, and congratulates all the other insurance companies named in the list this year.
Insurance Business have just released their Top 50 Elite Women in Insurance, an annual initiative to honour the work of exceptional women leaders across the industry.
We're delighted to announce that three of our female insurance professionals have received recognition on this list. Well done to the GT women who made it through the nomination stage and into the final 50:
- Robyn Watkins, Technical Underwriting Specialist
- Michelle Domanski, Claims Team Leader
- Shelagh Bock, General Manager AM&T
2023 marks GT's third consecutive year in the Top 50 list, and the second year of nominations for both Robyn and Michelle.
About Elite Women
Each year, Insurance Business invites insurance professionals Australia-wide to nominate outstanding female leaders for the Elite Women in Insurance list. To qualify, nominees must be working in a role that relates to, interacts with or impacts the general industry. In addition, they need to demonstrate a clear passion for insurance and commitment to their clients.
A dedicated IB team reviews all nominations, including the nominee's standout professional achievements over the past 12 months, their meaningful contribution to diversity and inclusion in the industry, and professional accomplishments and contributions to the industry. The list of nominees is then narrowed down to the final 50 Elite Women in Insurance.
We're incredibly proud of our hardworking GT women and all that they do for our clients. Congratulations to the nominees and finalists!
